False Doctrine | Partial Atonement

Let's take a look at one of the most misunderstood SDA doctrines, and understanding why it contradicts Scripture so that we can discern truth without fear or confusion.

The SDA Teaching: “Investigative Judgment” (1844 Doctrine)

Seventh‑day Adventists teach that:

  • Jesus completed part of His atonement at the Cross
  • But the atonement was not fully finished
  • In 1844, Jesus entered a “Most Holy Place” in heaven
  • He began a process called Investigative Judgment
  • In this phase, Jesus examines believers’ lives to determine who is truly saved
  • This judgment is necessary before He returns

In their view, the Cross opened the way, but the final atonement is still being completed in heaven.

This is doctrine contradicts Scripture.

What the Bible Actually Teaches

1. Jesus finished the atonement at the Cross — completely.

Jesus didn’t say, “Part of it is finished.”

He said:

“It is finished.”
John 19:30

The Greek word tetelestai means:

  • paid in full
  • completed
  • nothing left to add

There is no biblical hint of a second phase of atonement beginning 1,800 years later.

2. Jesus entered the Most Holy Place immediately after His ascension.

SDA doctrine says Jesus only entered the Most Holy Place in 1844.

But Scripture says:

“He entered once for all into the holy places… by His own blood.”
Hebrews 9:12

Not in 1844.
Not in two phases.
Not after a prophetic calculation.

He entered once, immediately, fully.

3. Believers are already justified — not waiting for a heavenly review.

SDA teaching says Jesus is reviewing believers’ lives to determine who is saved.

But the Bible says:

“We have been justified by faith.”
Romans 5:1

“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1

Justification is present, not pending.

4. Judgment is future — not beginning in 1844.

The Bible teaches a future judgment, not a secret heavenly review that began in the 19th century.

“He has set a day when He will judge the world.”
Acts 17:31

A day — not a phase.
Future — not 1844.
Public — not hidden.

Why This Matters

The SDA doctrine unintentionally teaches:

  • the Cross wasn’t enough
  • salvation isn’t fully secure
  • Jesus’ work is still incomplete
  • believers must pass a heavenly review to be accepted

This undermines the finished work of Christ.

The Bible teaches the opposite:

  • Jesus’ sacrifice is complete
  • His blood is enough
  • Salvation is secure in Him
  • Judgment for believers is already settled at the Cross

A Simple Summary

SDA teaching:

Jesus’ atonement is still being completed in heaven through an investigative judgment that began in 1844.

Bible teaching:

Jesus finished the atonement at the Cross, entered the Most Holy Place immediately, and believers are already justified.

Let's get our facts straight and not be misled by someone's unbiblical teaching.
